Chiropractic: Frequently Asked Questions

What is "Chiropractic"?

Chiropractic, also sometimes called chiropractic medicine or chiropractic care, is a branch of the healing arts that focuses most closely on the relationship of the musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones, usually of the spine) and the nervous system. Though chiropractors (those who practice "Chiropractic") most often examine, diagnose, and treat spinal problems, they are concerned about the health of the whole person and are trained in diagnosis of conditions that affect the whole body.

What does a chiropractor do?

A chiropractor will talk to you about your health history and specifically about what health problem brings you to his office. He will examine and diagnose your condition and suggest ways to deal with the problem. Sometimes x-rays or other studies may be done to further evaluate the problem. If the chiropractor establishes that you have a problem that will respond well to chiropractic procedures he will be happy to treat you.

What does a chiropractic treatment consist of?

A chiropractor will probably use chiropractic manipulative therapy, also known as an "adjustment", to your spine. In some circumstances an adjustment can also be given to the extremities. Other procedures involved in treatment may use heat or cold, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, and therapeutic exercise.

How safe are chiropractic treatments?

Chiropractic treatments are very safe. The treatments are non-invasive and have proven themselves over many years. Chiropractors are well trained and are licensed by the state in evaluation and treatment of health problems. They can adapt treatment techniques to fit the individual. Six government inquiries into chiropractic that have been undertaken worldwide over the last 25 years have concluded that chiropractic is safe, effective, and cost-efficient.

Can children and adults of all ages benefit from chiropractic care?

Yes. Children and even infants can be treated safely by chiropractors for a variety of problems that develop from the usual falls and traumas of life. Children often respond much more rapidly than adults. Senior citizens find that the quality of their lives can be enhanced by chiropractic treatment for many spinal aches and pains, which they previously blamed on "arthritis". While chiropractic cannot put an end to the many afflictions of age, it can help maximize the patient's health.
